With great joy, we Venezuelans have received the news of the canonization of the first two holy sons of our homeland: Dr. José Gregorio Hernández, popularly known as the 'doctor of the poor,' and Mother Carmen Rendiles, religious sister and founder of the Congregation of the Servants of Jesus." With these words, the Venezuelan bishops open their Pastoral Letter published on October 7, twelve days before a historic event that Pope Leo XIV will preside over on Sunday, October 19, in St. Peter's Square.
Dr. José Gregorio Hernández, born in Isnotú, Trujillo, devoted his life to the study and practice of medicine, guided by a profound Christian spirit. A pioneer in modernizing Venezuelan medicine, his life embodied a remarkable blend of faith, humility, and dedication to serving the most vulnerable.
Born in Caracas in 1903, Carmen Elena Rendiles Martínez radiated strength and joy despite physical challenges. This exemplary religious leader was renowned for her devotion to Eucharistic adoration, education, and charitable works. As noted in the pastoral letter, she demonstrated remarkable leadership and a foundational spirit by establishing the Servants of Jesus congregation in Venezuela, faithfully preserving the charism of service and prayer that defined her life.
Con gran júbilo, los venezolanos hemos recibido la noticia de la canonización de los dos primeros santos hijos de nuestra patria: el Dr. José Gregorio Hernández, llamado popularmente, el 'médico de los pobres' y la Madre Carmen Rendiles, religiosa y fundadora de la Congregación de las Siervas de Jesús". Con estas palabras, los obispos venezolanos abren su Carta Pastoral publicada el 7 de octubre, a doce días de un acontecimiento histórico que presidirá el Papa León XIV el domingo 19 de octubre en la Plaza de San Pedro.
El Dr. José Gregorio Hernández, nacido en Isnotú, Trujillo, dedicó su vida al estudio y a la práctica de la medicina con un profundo sentido cristiano. Considerado un pionero de la modernización médica en Venezuela, su vida fue, al mismo tiempo, un testimonio de fe, humildad y servicio a los más pobres .
Carmen Elena Rendiles Martínez, nacida en Caracas en 1903, vivió con fortaleza y alegría a pesar de sus limitaciones físicas. Religiosa ejemplar, se distinguió por su dedicación a la adoración eucarística, la educación y la caridad. La carta pastoral destaca su liderazgo y su espíritu fundacional al crear en Venezuela la congregación de las Siervas de Jesús, preservando el carisma de servicio y oración que marcó su vida.

The Jubilee Indulgence is a concrete manifestation of God's mercy, which goes beyond and transforms the boundaries of human justice.
This treasury of grace entered human history in the witness of Jesus and the saints, and by living in communion with them our hope for our own forgiveness is strengthened and becomes a certainty.
The Jubilee indulgence allows us to free our hearts from the weight of sin because the reparation due for our sins is given freely and abundantly.
In practical terms, the experience of God’s mercy involves some spiritual acts indicated by the Pope. Those who cannot make the Jubilee pilgrimage due to illness or other circumstances are nonetheless invited to take part in the spiritual movement that accompanies the Jubilee year, offering up the sufferings of their daily lives, and participating in the Eucharistic celebration.
La indulgencia es una manifestación concreta de la misericordia de Dios, que supera los límites de la justicia humana y los transforma.
Este tesoro de gracia se hizo historia en Jesús y en los santos: viendo estos ejemplos, y viviendo en comunión con ellos, la esperanza del perdón y del propio camino de santidad se fortalece y se convierte en una certeza.
La indulgencia permite liberar el propio corazón del peso del pecado, para poder ofrecer con plena libertad la reparación debida.
Concretamente, esta experiencia de misericordia pasa a través de algunas acciones espirituales que son indicadas por el Papa. Aquellos que, por enfermedad u otra causa, no puedan realizar la peregrinación están invitados, de todos modos, a tomar parte del movimiento espiritual que acompaña a este Año, ofreciendo su sufrimiento y su vida cotidiana y participando en la celebración eucarística.

This Jubilee Year is dedicated to celebrate the 2025th Anniversary of the Incarnation of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The theme, the motto for this Jubilee Year proposed by Pope Francis is “Pilgrims of Hope”. Pope Francis invites us to “fan the flame of hope that has been given us, and help everyone to gain new strength and certainty”.
This Jubilee Year of 2025 will offer the faithful opportunities to participate in various jubilee events at the Vatican and in their own dioceses. For pilgrims in Miami who cannot travel to Rome, Archbishop Wenski has designated the Cathedral of Miami and other popular Catholic places in the Archdiocese as special places of prayer for Jubilee Year pilgrims, offering opportunities for reconciliation, indulgences and other events intended to strengthen and revive the faith.
Our Lady of Guadalupe Church has been blessed by being selected as one the 6 churches/shrines as special places of prayer for Jubilee Year Pilgrims.
The basic conditions to gain an indulgence are
- be purified through the sacrament of penance
- be refreshed by the reception of the Holy Communion
- and pray for the pope.
Groups of faithful who wish to organize pilgrimages to one or more of the designated churches or shrines should coordinate with the designated site so that the pilgrims can be properly welcomed and have access to the Sacraments, especially confession.

Este Año Jubilar está dedicado a la Celebración del Aniversario 2,025 de la Encarnación de Nuestro Señor y Salvador, Jesucristo. El tema, el lema para este Año Jubilar propuesto por el Papa Francisco es “Peregrinos de la esperanza”. El Papa Francisco nos invita a “avivar la llama de la esperanza que se nos ha dado y ayudar a todos a adquirir nuevas fuerzas y certezas”.
Este Año Jubilar de 2025 ofrecerá a los fieles oportunidades de participar en diversos eventos jubilares en el Vaticano y en sus propias diócesis. Para los peregrinos en Miami que no pueden viajar a Roma, el Arzobispo Wenski ha designado la Catedral de Miami y otros lugares católicos populares en la Arquidiócesis como lugares especiales de oración para los peregrinos del Año Jubilar, ofreciendo oportunidades para la reconciliación, indulgencias y otros eventos destinados a fortalecer y revivir la fe.
La Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe ha sido bendecida al ser seleccionada como una de las 6 iglesias/santuarios como lugares especiales de oración para los peregrinos del Año Jubilar.
Las condiciones básicas para obtener una indulgencia son
- ser purificados mediante el sacramento de la penitencia
- refrescarse con la recepción de la Sagrada Comunión
- y orar por el Papa.
Los grupos de fieles que deseen organizar peregrinaciones a una o más de las iglesias o santuarios designados deben coordinarse con el lugar designado para que los peregrinos puedan ser recibidos adecuadamente y tener acceso a los sacramentos, especialmente la confesión.
